Sustainable weight loss

Sustainable weight loss needs a deficit of 300-500 kcal per day, around 0.3-0.5 kg a week, protein near 1.6 g per kg to protect muscle, and at least 7000 daily steps. Harsher deficits speed up the initial drop but increase later weight regain.

The right deficit

A deficit of 15-20 per cent below maintenance allows fat loss while keeping energy, training and social life. Below 1200 kcal for a woman and 1500 for a man the risk of deficiencies and dropout rises quickly.

Protein and training against muscle loss

In a deficit part of the lost weight is lean mass. Raising protein to 1.6-2.0 g per kg and lifting weights two or three times a week clearly reduces that share.

Maintenance starts on day one

The habits that last are the ones built during weight loss: planning meals, cooking at home most of the time, weighing yourself regularly and not eliminating favourite foods.

Frequently asked questions

Why does weight stall after a few weeks?

Energy expenditure falls with body weight and adherence drifts unnoticed. Recalculating calories every three or four kg and weighing food for a few days almost always breaks the plateau.

Are cheat days necessary?

They are not necessary, but one flexible meal a week helps long term adherence more than a rigid scheme.
